The voyage of the HMS Beagle begins. Having just graduated university, 22 year old Darwin is taken on the HMS Beagle under CPT Robert FitzRoy as Ship's Naturalist. Over the next 5 years Charles Darwin would discover, collect and document organisms of all types in a multitude of environments. -

Darwin meets Nicolai Olaus Lossius. He shared his knowledge of Galapagos fauna, stating and demonstrating the ability to identify a tortoises island of origin based on its physical features. It is believed their conversations may have been the catalyst that solidified Darwin's observations into his Theory of Evolution. -

Darwin reads Malthus. Sometime in 1838 Darwin read Thomas Malthus' "An Essay on the Principle of Population" (Malthus, Thomas . An Essay of the Principle of Population. 1798). Malthus' ideas on how population pressure forces species to adapt to limited resources becomes another catalyst that coalesces Darwin's observations into their ultimate form published later in "On the Origin of Species" (Darwin, Charles. "On the Origin of Species. 1859) as the Theory of Evolution. -
