  • Charles Darwin 2/12/1809-4/19/1882

    Charles Darwin is born and is influenced by his family's relationship to science since birth. His late grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, published the idea of evolution though poetry. His father, Robert Darwin was a physicist, linking Charles deep into the scientific world.
    Here is a link to Erasmus Darwin's book, Zoonomia, which was of major influence to Charles.
  • Charles Darwin and Coral Reefs (1809-1882)

    Charles took a course on geology and came up with a theory that rings of coral that surround islands, may be the rims of extinct volcanoes. He drew an illustration of his theory, so that people can understand him better.

  • Charles Darwin and HMS Beagle (1809-1882)

    In 1842 he wrote an outline of his ideas and observations based on his trip on HMS Beagle, and on 1844 he wrote an essay. Darwin joined this ship where he explored the coasts of South America for five years. Here he observed the diversity of species in the Galapagos Islands, specifically tortoises and birds. This is where he started to realize that the animals on the islands evolved after coming from the mainland.
  • Charles Darwin's Publication(1809-1882)

    In 1859, Darwin published his theory of evolution, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or, The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. With time as his publication was read and understood, the world came to accept his theory of evolution.
