    Darwin began his nearly 5 year voyage on the HMS Beagle
    Charles Darwin set sail aboard the HMS Beagle on December 27, 1831. He was 22 years old when he was hired to work as the ship's naturalist. Darwin spent a significant amount of time in South America collecting plants and animals to contribute to his research. His experiences and observations helped develop his theory of evolution through natural selection.

    Darwin began writing his journal of researches
    Throughout the years Darwin collected many notes, and pocket diaries on his findings. He eventually combined all these notes into one journal, "Charles Darwin's Pocket Diary (DAR 158)". His journal served as a priceless tool that allowed his discoveries and research to be dated. His journal was eventually published in 1839. He wrote in his journal regularly with his last entry being December 1881, four months before his death.

    Charles Darwin passes away at age 73
    Charles passed away at age 73 in 1882. He died at the Down House surrounded by his friends and family. His expectations were to be buried in a local cemetery but his scientific mentors and partners requested he be buried at Westminster Abbey in London. Darwin, Charles.
