Birth and Early Years
Charles Darwin is born in Shrewsbury early in the year of 1809. His father was a physician. From a young age, Charles Darwin was fascinated with the studies of the natural world. During his years as a boy and teenager he was an avid reader and outdoor explorer. In 1825, Darwin enrolled in medical school at the University of Edinburgh. After witnessing the traumatizing surgery of a child without anesthesia, Charles Darwin left school and transferred to Cambridge University to study Theology. -
Darwin Sets Sail
12 months after sitting for his BA exam and finishing 10th out of 178 candidates, Charles Darwin sets sail upon the "Beagle". He agreed to a 5 year sail. Over those years on the "Beagle". Little did he know, his findings would change the trajectory of Western scientific thinking forever. On his journey, he found things never seen before. He collected copious field notes, specimens of plants and animals, and fossils. In 1836, Charles Darwin returned to England to analyze his work and notes. -
The Studies of Darwin
In 1841, Charles Darwin published his first findings, "The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs". The next year, he writes a 35 page sketch of the theory of evolution. He was accused of blasphemy, but his works still became best sellers. Later in 1871, Charles Darwin published his theory that humans are descendants of apes. He was attacked heavily for his theory, but he stood his grounds. -
Darwin's Legacy
After a heart attack, seizures, and great suffering Charles Darwin dies and is buried in Westminster Abbey. Although he was now dead, his legacy and work would be studied and revered for decades to follow. While there is still holes in his theories, it could take multiple lifetimes to fully understand the possibility of evolution in the human race. We can look at other species of animal and plants to determine how natural selection and evolution works, and the proof is there! -
