  • Charles Darwin 1809-1882

    Charles Darwin was Born February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. He was the fifth child of Robert Waring Darwin, which was a physician, and Susannah Wedgwood. In 1817 his mother passed away and his 3 sisters took on the responsibilities of raising the family. Charles Darwin started Unitarian day school in 1817 as well. From 1818-1825 Darwin attends Shrewsbury School as a boarder. He did not like that school. Was very plain to him.
  • 1831-1839

    In 1831 Charles Darwin was invited on a survey voyage to South America on the HMS Beagle. The voyage lasted for five years which took him all around the world. Darwin encounters slavery in Brazil and connects with the indigenous people of Tierra del Fuego. Darwin marries Emma Wedgwood on January 29, 1839. They had ten children with three children passing during infancy. Emma and the children played an important role in Darwin's research.
  • 1859-1871

    Darwin published The Origin of Species by Natural Selection, or Preserving Preferred Races in the Struggle for Life. It quickly became a bestseller, but opinions are divided on the theory of evolution. The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, Darwin's second book on evolutionary theory, focuses on human evolution and sexual selection. Because of its inclusion of humans in the natural order, Darwin has been often satirized in the media as an ape or monkey.
  • 1872-1882

    The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals is published by Darwin. Darwin then publishes Insectivorous Plants, after sixteen long years of studying them during July 1875. He is fascinated by their ability to digest food in a manner comparable to that of animals. His final book of The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Actions of Worms is published May 1, 1881. Darwin was given a honorable funeral and laid to rest in Westminster Abbey on April 19, 1882.
