Voyage to Galapagos- Charles Darwin 12FEB1809-19APR1882
In 1831 Darwin joined a 5 year long voyage on the HMS Beagle as an unpaid naturalist. The most notable stop made by the Beagle was to the Galapagos Islands where there are species that are found no where else in the world. He had available to him the first volumes of "Principles of Geology" that helped prepare him before reaching the islands. -
Natural Selection- Charles Darwin 12FEB1809-19APR1882
After returning home he identified 13 species of finches with varying in beak size and shape. These observations paired with his prior research helped him come to the conclusion that populations consist of individuals with different variations which aid in their survival. These variations are then passed to their offspring and become more common as the population evolves. This become known as "survival of the fittest", fit meaning built to survive within the environment it's born. -
Origin of Species- Charles Darwin 12FEB1809-19APR1882
These ideas formulated by Darwin took years to come about in the form of print. It was not until the age of 50 in November of 1859 that he published his theory of evolution. This is known to be one of Darwin’s greatest contribution to science not only for the theory but because it led the way to population thinking which emphasizes the variation among individuals. 24 NOV 1859- Origin of Species- Darwin, Charles. The Descent of Man-Charles Darwin 12FEB1809-19APR1882
Darwin decided to expand upon natural selection with his book The Descent of Man. His purpose was to explore whether man descended from a pre-existing form, how that development occurs, and the importance of racial variation among the species of man.
