Birth of Darwin
We all must start somewhere. Darwin was born on February 12th 1809 in Shrewsberry, England. Born to parents with a successful medical practice in the surrounding area of Shrewberry. Darwin’s love for nature evolved since his childhood. -
Observations on the Parallel Roads of Glen Roy
One of the biggest pieces of evidence of Darwin building off the works of those before him, in this case, amateur geologists. This paper was Darwin’s first full length scientific paper (John Van Wyhe). He made illustrations of his observations and contributed to the geological research of Glen Roy. The landscape which created the parallel roads of Glen Roy is noted as one of the greatest geological mysteries. No matter........ See attached video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A3Pq2TXKEU] -
Darwin's notes published on "The Voyage of the Beagle"
The book which sparked the beginning of Darwin’s multi version analytics of nature. As a Cambridge student he was inspired by Alexander von Humboldt’s tale of his 1799 voyage “from Spain, to Tenerife in the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, then to South America.” (Richards, Richard A). Darwin would partake on his own expeditions that often lasted several weeks or more. What was significant about his notes during this time was that they held a record of a variety....... This was the book that changed it all for Darwin. At the time it received equal praise and equal backlash. Most notably the claims made in his book put into debate about “the precise nature of creation and continuance of life on Earth.” (Francis, Keith). Others before Darwin debating the topic of the origin of species in a religious contex.......(Continued) Link text -
The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the Same Species is published
Botany was not always Darwin’s go-to subject to study however he was very intrigued by the “heterostylous reproductive systems,” (Weller Stephen). Darwin had a hypothesis on how the reproductive systems function in the species contained in the book. Heterostyly is a genetic polymorphism in which two or three floral morphs occur in populations. Darwin investigated this extensively and published valid arguments that botanists today cite in their research. -
Death of Darwin
Charles Darwin died at age 73 and was laid to rest at Westminster Abbey on April 26th, 1882 (John Van Wyhe). In his Last Will and Testament, he named his eldest son his heir and also passed down his scientific library. He also gifted 1000 pounds each to some of his colleagues which he respected very much.
