Charles Darwin (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882)

  • Journal and Remarks

After his 5 year voyage on the HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin published his scientific observations in a 3-volume series along with the Captain of the ship. In this book, he hinted at his beginning thoughts for natural selection. He became famous and respected. (Book was reprinted under various titles, commonly, The Voyage of the Beagle) (1, 2).

  • On the Origin of Species

After years of further research, Charles Darwin, published his well-formed ideas describing the process of natural selection. In this book, he introduced the Theory of Evolution (although he does not use the word Evolution just yet) (1,3).

  • The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

In this book, Darwin describes his research that races were not different species, but all the same species. Some of the proof to this argument for monogenism was the intercrossing that was fertile. He also discussed the Sexual Selection, where he believed the female will choose a mate based on desirable characteristics. Unfortunately, some of these ideas will go into the Eugenics that the Nazis later used (4). 4.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Descent_of_Man,_and_Selection_in_Relation_to_Sex
  • The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals

Darwin describes how expressions and emotions evolved in this book. He takes a psychology approach to explain how they came to form (5). Darwin expressed his belief that emotions were important for humans and interactions. He recapitulates his belief that it supports the single human origin as emotions and expressions are among all.
