Charles Robert Darwin was born on this day, February 12th, 1809, in the town of Shrewsbury, England. His father, Robert Darwin was a doctor, and his mother's name was Susannah. This event is significant because Darwin later on became famous for supporting his idea of natural selection (Karp 12). -
James Madison becomes president.
March 4th, 1809, was the day James Madison became the fourth U.S. president. He served from 1809, to March 4th, 1817. Some notable events of his were declaring war on Great Britain in 1812, and he was also in office when the White House was captured by the british and burned (Grun 379-400). -
United States declares war on Britain.
The war of 1812 began on June 18th, 1812, and ended on February 15th, 1815. James Madison was president at the time, and he was also the one who initiated the war. The war was ended by agreement (Grun 379-400). -
Prussia declares war on France.
On the 17th of March in 1813, Prussia declared war on France. This was a war of liberation. This war was part of the War of the Sixth Coalition, which all were a part of the Napoleanic Wars (Grun 379-400). -
Began at Edinburgh University.
Charle's father sent him to Edinburgh, Scotland in October of 1825 to follow the family in becoming a physician. Darwin found out while observing an operation that he couldn't stand the sight of blood. So instead, he left Edinburgh and moved on to Cambridge University (Moss & Wilson 116-125). -

Because Darwin was bored at Edinburgh, he made the switch to Cambridge University in November of 1827. While there, he studied more subjects suited for him. He also met two very important people in his life, Henslow and Sedgewick (Gardener). -
Slavery is abolished in Mexico.
On this day, September 15th, 1829, the last of the Mexican slaves were freed. The Guerrero Decree is what abolished slavery in the Republic of Mexico, which was issued by President Vicente R. Guerrero (Grun 379-400). -
Set sail on the HMS Beagle voyage.
This day, December 27th, 1831, was the day the HMS Beagle set sail on their five year journey. This scientific trip was a huge contribution to all of Darwin's ideas and his theory. The voyage was a significant part of Darwin's book on the origin of species ("Charles Darwin" 2013). -

After five long years on The Beagle, Darwin finally returned to England on October 19th, 1836. A lot of observations and new information were collected on his trip (Moss & Wilson 116-125). -
Married his cousin, Emma Wedgewood.
In January of 1839, Darwin married his cousin, Emma Wedgewood. Together, they raised ten children. Darwin trusted Emma to publish his work, in case of a sudden death (Moss & Wilson 116-125). -
Recieved letter from Alfred Russell Wallace.
In May of 1839, Darwin recieved a letter from a man named Alfred Russell Wallace. In the letter was basicallty a shortened version of Darwin's theory he was in the process of composing. He decided to team up with Wallace (Moss & Wilson 116-125). -
Presents idea with Wallace to Linnean Society.
On July 1st, 1858, Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace presented their theory together to an important scientific organization in London. The name of that organization was the Linnean Society (Stevens 112-119). -
Published his book "The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection".
With all the information Darwin collected and found, on November 24th, 1859, he published his book "The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection". Thanks to his studies, voyage research, and teaming up with Wallace, Darwin could piece it all together for his book. When it was published, it started much contorversy (Stevens 112-119). -
Asassination of Abraham Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while at the Fords' Theatre in Washington, D.C. Some noteable events from Lincoln were abolishing slavery in Columbia, and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation (Grun 379-400). -
Russia sells Alaska to the United States.
On October 18th, 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. The ceremony took place in Sitka, Alaska. The U.S. bought the land for 7.2 million dollars (Grun 379-400). -
Death.
On April 19th, 1882, Darwin died at the age of 73. His death was said to be from disease of the heart. Darwin was buried in Westminister Abbey, close to Isaac Newton and John Herschel (Moss & Wilson 116-125).
