    Second Battle of the Civil War. Only two months after the attack on Fort Sumter.
  • The Confederate States of America is formed

    Representatives from each of the seceding states met in Montgomery, Alabama to formally create the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis was elected president.
  • Fort Sumter

    First battle in Charleston, North Carolina. Started the war after the Confederates attacked.
  • Ironclads

    Ironclads
    The Confederate ironclad had attacked Union ones in the Chesapeake Bay. Union shells would bounce right off the Confederate ship, but the brought their own ironclad. Neither side won.
  • The Battle of Shiloh

    Most deadly battle of the Civil War with a total of 23,000 casualites
  • Capturing New Orlens

    A few weeks after Shiloh, David Farragut captured the South's largest city and most important port.
  • The Battle of Antietam

    The Battle of Antietam
    Lee had invaded Maryland and wanted to confuse the Union. He wanted to split his troops up and have them come in from different directions. However, one of his soldiers lost his instructions and the Union found them.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation
    Lincoln's address that stated all the enslaved people in rebel-held territory would be free. It did not apply to those in Union-slave states and did not compel the slaveholders to let them go.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    The Confederates had entered looking for supplies and didn't want to fight somewhere where he didn't know the land. While they had outnumbered the Union, the still lost.
  • The Siege of Vicksburg

    On the day that Lee had retreated from Gettysburg, the Confederacy lost the important city of Vicksburg that helped them keep the Mississippi River under their control.

    Lincoln honored the soldiers that had fought and died in a two minute speech.
