A series of negotiations in Berlin, where all European nations met to decide upon all questions connected to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. The conference was proposed by Portugal, which wanted to claim control over the Congo estuary.

A group of American planters led by Sanford Dole overthrow Hawaiian monarch Queen Liliuokalani. The Americans then started a new provincial government with Dole as their president.
