Outbreak of Nationalism in Russia
Nationalism broke out in 1914 due to the outbreak of war. This united Russians and caused armies to "dash to battle with enthusiasm."

Russian Fatalities
In 1915, many soldiers had run out of ammunition and Russia had run out of supplies. This caused Russians to start dying quickly with the fatalities at 2 million in only 1915.

Rasputin is Killed
Rasputin is killed by a group of Russian nobles. He is poisoned with cyanide-laced cakes and wines, shot twice, beaten badly, and drowned. His actual cause of death was drowning.

Lenin Returns
Lenin returns on 16 April 1917 after Germany helped him return home in hopes of weakening Russia. Lenin was met at the train station platform in Petergrad (St. Petersburg) by a crowd that included exiles and activists.

Communists Produce a Constitution
Communists produced a constitution in 1922 that was a combination of democratic and socialist ideals. This gave all citizens 18 and older the right to vote and united the old empire to make the USSR (Soviet Union). Communists still ruled over Russia.

Lenin Dies
Lenin died in January of 1924. His body was preserved and place in Red Square for more than 65 years.

1928-1939

The Great Purge
Stalin feared uprising and launched The Great Purge" in using his own secret police to carry out orders. First they arrested Old Bolsheviks and party activists from the old regime in Russia. Later he targeted army heroes, industrial managers, writers, and even ordinary people.
