Indian Removal Act
The Indian Removal Act was passed by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830. This authorized him to negotiate with the Native Americans in the Southern United States for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their homelands. -

John L. O’Sullivan coined the phrase “manifest destiny” in 1845 to represent a set of ideals present in the United States at that time. These ideals included: the notion of westward expansionism, a belief in American exceptionalism, a sense of entitlement to the North American continent, and a religious/moral obligation to spread American democracy. -

War between the Confederate States of America and the Union. The southern states seceded from the Union in January of 1861. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived this as a threat since he was against slavery. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was an order issued to all segments of the Executive branch (including the Army and Navy) of the United States by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War.It proclaimed all those enslaved in Confederate territory to be forever free, and ordered the Army to treat as free all those enslaved in ten states that were still in rebellion, thus applying to 3.1 million of the 4 million slaves in the U.S. -
