Aircraft was launched from aircraft carriers bombed and strafed enemy ships more than 70 miles away. The five day battle took away more than half each sides plane. This battle was a draw but it destroyed Lexington and badly damaged Yorktown.

This is a batttle in the pacific where 27 medal of honor were awarded which is more then in any other battle. There is an estimated 27,000 casualities sufferred by American forces. There is a famous picture of the American soldiers raising the United States flag on Mt. Surabachi.
