    The Battle of the Bulge was an attack on American supplies into Belgium by the Germans. The attack caught American defenders by surprise. The German troops raced west, their lines bulged outward and the attack became known as the Battle of the Bulge .

    60,000 marines landed on Iwo Jima as an emergency landing site to refuel their airplanes. Americans went inland and attacked the Japanese with explosives and flamethrowers. More than 6,800 marines were killed trying to capture the island.
