Union's plan
Major General Joseph Hooker takes his men across the Rappahannock fords to attack Lee's weak side of the army. -
Threatening Hooker's position
The attack to the weak side of Lee's army backfired on Hooker, leaving the Union XI corps stunned. -
Confederates drive the Union Back
Confederates on their offensive pushed the Union Army back 2 miles towards the fords. -
Second Battle of Fredericksburg
On May 2nd, Hooker ordered Sedgwick to come towards Chancellorsville to connect with him, giving the command to attack and destroy any force that got in his way. Lee had left a relatively small force in Fredericksburg, who were ordered to hold Segwicks men where they were. -
Hooker: Defensive
Hooker had made no threatening offensive moves leaving Lee to think they should take advantage of this and attack. But by the time this message got out, it was already after dark. -
Early VS. Sedgwick
Early occupied Marye's Heights, cutting off Sedgewick. Lee sent Early Anderson's division, leaving him with a total of 21,000 men and a slight advantage over Sedgewick. -
Sedgwick withdrew
Sedgwick withdrew his men across the Fords. Hooker felt he was out of options on how to save the campaign. He called a council of war to vote whether the men would stay and fight or withdraw. Most voted to stay and fight but Hooker had had enough. -
Confederates Victory
Hooker, the night of the 5th and the morning of the 6th retreated across the Fords and withdrew from the Battle. Weather was bad and threatened safety while crossing the River. Hooker had ordered not to attack although tempting.Lee wanted to attack once more but by the time the men had gotten into position, Hooker's troops were gone. Leaving Lee with victory.
