The short-handled hoe ranged from 12-24 inches in length. Because of this, many have noted that farmworkers were forced to crouch very low to do work on farmlands, which ultimately led to serious back injuries. Worse, some young, still-developing kids who worked the land reported suffering recurring pain in their later years because of the associated irregular growth trajectories. However, even with complaints like this, it took years for the hoe to be outlawed. -
