paeleogene period 65 - 23 mya
This consists of the Paleocene, Eocene and Oligocene epochs.It lasted around 43 million years.The paleogene period involved the evolution of mammals from simple forms to a large group of diverse animals.This period had no dinosaurs which led to the evolution and the mammals flourishing due to a lack of predators.The climate changed from humid and sub-tropical conditions to a cooler and drier environment. -
Neogene Period 23 - 2.6 mya
This includes the Miocene and Pliocene epochs.The Neogene covers 20 million years, making it the shortest of the eras. During this period mammals and birds evolved into roughly modern forms.Early hominids appeared in Africa.Some continental movement took place.The global climate cooled considerably,leading to a series of continential glaciations. -
Quarternary Era 2.6 mya to present.
Consists of the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. This period represents the time in which recognizable humans exsisted. In this time period there has been relatively no changes in the distribution of continents due to plate tectonics. ThE Quanternary period held large changes in its climate.The whole period is known as an ice age because it had more than 60 periods of glacial expansion that were separated by brief warm periods.
