Cell Theory Time Line

  • The First Compound Microscope

During the 1590, Zacharias Janssen made the first compound microscope with the help of his father. The microscope was not very good, but was a big help for seeing cells.
  • The Discovery of Cells

In 1665, Robert Hooke discovered cells for the first time while looking at a cork. He also figured out fossils are bones of living things.
  • The Discovery of Bacteria

    The Discovery of Bacteria
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch scientist. He discovered bacteria and protozoa. He also did other like 1677 describe spermatozoa. In 1680 he was the first one to notice has globular particles. This is important to the cell theory because bacteria and protozoans are cells that are harmful and cause diseases. Without the cell theory and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's discovery we would not know what causes diseases.
  • The Naming of the Nucleus

    The Naming of the Nucleus
Robert Brown was not the first person to see and identify a cell nucleus. But Robert Brown named it as a cell nucleus. This is important to the cell theory because being able to name things inside of cells makes it easier to identify for further research.
  • An Egg-cellent Discovery

    An Egg-cellent Discovery
Francesco Redi was an Italian scientist that discovered eggs can be laid on molding meat from flies and do not come from literally no where. This may not seem important to the cell theory, but shows that not all life forms can be seen with human eyes, like eggs and cells.
  • Microscopic Organisms

Félix Dujardin was a French scientist that studied microscopic animals. In 1835, he discovered that microscopic organisms have the same organisms as other animals.

The Identification of Cells in Plants and Animal Structures

During these two years, Matthias Jacob Schleiden did a lot of work to contribute to the cell theory. In 1838, he identified that cells are the building blocks of plant structure, and then he also identified that cells are the building blocks of animal structures. Matthias also co-founded the cell theory with Theodor Schwann.
  • The Addition of Animals to the Cell Theory

Theodor Schwann was a German psychologist that added animals to the cell theory. He defined cells as the basic unit of structures in animals. Knowing that animals are in the cell theory is very important because it gives more proof to the fact cells are the building blocks of every living organism.

The Change of the Cell Theory

Alexander Carl Heinrich Braun changed the cell theory. He was the one who add that cells are basic units of all life forms to the theory.
  • The Explanation of Tissue Diseases

    The Explanation of Tissue Diseases
Rudolf Virchow is very important to the cell theory. He was a german scientist that used the cell theory to explain tissue diseases. Without the cell theory, this discovery may have never happened.
