  • 1) TOP OF THE CLASS

    Adeline topped her class that week and she had received a silver medal which she could wear for 7 days together with a certificate. =D
  • 2) THE TIANJIN FAMILY

    Adeline's family blamed her for causing their mother's death and never forgave her as her mother died while giving birth to her. :(((
  • 5) LIFE IN TIANJIN

    Adeline started kindergarden at St Joseph's French Convent School, and her big sister was already in the fifth grade there. After school, her Big Sister suddenly asked her imperiously who made Adeline. When she asked Adeline why did God make her and Adeline could not answer her since her teacher has not told them yet, her Big Sister screamed at her that she was stupid and it was just an excuse. She suddenly grabbed Adeline's medal and jerked it, becoming enraged as she slapped Adeline hardly. ;(
  • 6) NAI NAI'S DEATH

    Fifteen minutes after Adeline left Nai Nai's room, Ye Ye was pounding on her bathroom door. Nai Nai had fainted. Aunt Baba telephoned the doctor but it was already too late. Nai Nai had died of a massive stroke. The next day, there was a grand funeral. At the Buddhist Temple, the monks held a solemn ceremony.
  • 8) FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL

    Adeline was in a new school called Sacred Heart. After school was let out in the afternoon, Adeline waited with all the other first-graders for their mothers, but nobody came for Adeline and she did not know the way home :(.
  • 7) ARRIVAL IN SHANGHAI

    Ye Ye took Big Sister, Big Brother, Second Brother and Adeline for an outing to Shanghai.
  • 3) FATHER REMARRIED

    In 1942, her father remarried. Little did Adeline know that her stepmother, whom they called "Niang", was a mean and heartless mother towards her later.
  • 4) NAI NAI'S BOUND FEET

    Adeline asked her grandmother curiously, Nai Nai, why her feet were so tiny as if her toes had been partly cut off. Nai Nai replied her that when she was 3 years old, a tight bandage was wound around her feet as it was a custom in China.
