This law mandated that any person aware of an escaped slaves whereabouts must report it, and help with his /her returning to their "owner". This policy was hated by the Northern states, arguably one of the last straws to be pulled from the North.

    Sumner Attacks Brookes In The Senate
    On the 21st of May, Senator Charles Sumner gave a speech knon as "Bloody Kansas". Part of this speech personally bashed South Carolinas Senator Andrew Butler. Preston Brooks took this personally since Andrew Butler was a cousin of his. The next day Brooks entered the Senate chamber where Sumner was working at his desk, and beat him over the head with his cane. Brooks was given a $300 fine, and resigned from his seat in the senate. He returned home seeking approval for his actions.

    Abolitionist John Brown attempted to start a slave revolt by seizing a US arsenal in Harper's Fairy, Virginia. Him and 20 other men were defeated by Col. Robert E. Lee. Brown asked Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglas to accompany him on his raid, Douglas declined because he believed his plan would fail, and Tubman was prevented by illness.

Southern delegates walked out when it was decided that a strong idea of popular sovereighnty was to be displayed. Northern democrats met in Baltimore and nominated Stephen Douglas who had lost support following "Bleeding Kansas. Lincoln wins the ekection as a Republican.
