THE MISSOURI COMPROMISE
Missouri entered as a slave state and Maine entered as a free state. The 36’ 30’’ line was drawn. This line decided whether slavery would be allowed in certain territories or not. This lasted for almost 40 years before it was aproblem. -
COMPROMISE OF 1850
California enters as a free state. The area from Mexican Cession was divided into Utah and New Mexico. Also, the Slavery issue was decided by popular sovereignty. This also ended the slave trade in Washington D.C. Strict Fugitive Slave Law would get put in place. Finally this Settled border problems between New Mexico and Texas. -
FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW
A law that made citizens catch runaway slaves. If a person would not comply they would be fined up to $1,000 or jailed. Northerners didn't like this because it forced them back into the system of slavery. -
UNCLE TOM’S CABIN
A novel written by Harriett Beecher Stowe. This book showed the evil of slavery and many Northerners began to change their view on slavery. Southerners said the book was full of lies. -
KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT
Divided land into Kansas and Nebraska territories. Decided that slavery would be decided by popular sovereignty. This created violence in the senate. Northerners thought that thisrepeals the Missouri Compromise. -
POTTOWATOMI CREEK KILLINGS
Because of the violence in Kanas John Brown decided to take the law into his own hands. He killed five pro-slavery men in the middle of the night. Many Northerners that didn't want slavery was against what John Brown did. -
DRED SCOTT DECISION
Dred Scott was a slave that had to become a slave again under the Supreme Court ruling. They ruled her was not human and that he was property. Congress also could not ban slavery in any of the territories. Southerners loved the ruling and Northerners hated it. It meant slavery could spread into all the territories. -
LINCOLN-DOUGLASS DEBATE
Douglass believed in deciding slavery by popular sovereignty. While Lincoln believed that slavery should not be allowed to spread into the territories. He also believed if they kept fighting the Union would not survive. -
RAID ON HARPER’S FERRY
John Brown led five blacks and thirteen whites into Harper’s Ferry. This was a slave revolt but none of the slaves rose. This would lead to Brown's arrest and later be hung. -
ELECTION OF 1860
Lincoln ran against Douglass in the Presidential Election of 1860. The southerners did not like Lincoln but he still got elected. Southerners were mad this would lead to them seceding from the Union.
