    The End of the Mexican American War occurred when they signed a treaty that gave land to the United States that was once owned by Mexico. The treaty is the longest running treaty between the US and Mexico.
  • The Fugitive Slave Law is passed

    The Fugitive Slave Law is passed
    The Fugitive Slave Law was an act that was passed that ensured that any runaway slave would be returned. They eventually added more laws that impacted the punishments that the slaves received.
    The law was eventually repealed in 1860 and only 30 slaves had been successfully brought back to their owners.
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin is published

    Uncle Tom’s Cabin is published
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a source that finally brought about how bad slavery was. It talked about how slaves were punished and mistreated. This began the anti-slavery push after people read this.

    Some Southern states had even banned this book because they believed that it falsely talked about how the slaves were treated.

    The Kansas-Nebraska act mandated popular sovereignty that allowed the states to choose what whether they are a slave state or not. This overturned the Missouri Compromise.
  • Brooks attacks Sumner

    Brooks attacks Sumner
    Brooks didn't agree with what Sumner said and thought he even went too far. Brooks wanted to teach Sumner a lesson so he struck Sumner over the head repeatedly with a cane. They wanted the expel Brooks but they couldn't so they charged him with a fine.

    The Dred Scott decision occurs when an African American man sued for freedom. He believed that after spending so much time in a free state that he was entitled to emancipation. The US court deemed that no black free or enslaved could be a US citizen. This event helped lead to the Civil War.

    The Lecompton Constitution was written by people that were proslavery. This bill permitted slavery, excluded free blacks from living in Kansas. They had 3 votes total and in the last vote, Lecompton Constitution was rejected by the Kansas territory.
  • John Brown raids Harper’s Ferry

    John Brown raids Harper’s Ferry
    John Brown created a small group to raid Haper's Ferry in an attempt to start an armed slave revolt and destroy slavery. Word had eventually got out about the raid and by morning they were surrounded. The soldiers overran them and 10 of his men were killed including two of his sons.

    The Election of Abrahman Lincoln occurred on November 6th, 1860. The Election was between him and Stephen Douglas Lincoln tried to pass a bill to abolish slavery and believed that slavery was bad. Weeks after Lincoln became president the Civil war was started.
