Brooks attacks sumner
Representative Preston Brooks used a walking cane to attack senator Charles sumner. Sumner was an abolitionist and made a speech a few days prior to the event which triggered the attack. -

The U.S supreme court ruled that Dred Scott an African American who lived in a free state had no freedoms.This decision caused major controversy and fueled the country pushing it closer to the war. -
Lecompton Constitution Rejected
Protecting slaveholding and a bill of rights excluded free blacks. This clause was eventually rejected by residents of the Kansas territory. Causing friction to the Civil War. -
John Brown's Raid On Harpers Ferry
this was an effort by abolitionist John Brown to start an armed slave revolt. He attacked and captured the U.S arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. -
