Dred Scott Decision
A slave named Dred Scott was taken to the North with his owner. After his owner died, he sued for his freedom, saying he was in a free state. The Supreme Court said he was not a citizen and could not sue. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
Stephen Douglas was against slavery, but believed it should be up to each state. Abraham Lincoln was against slavery, but believed Congress couldnt eliminate slavery but just keep it from spreading. The two men had several debates because they were running for Senate. Slavery was the main topic. -
Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown was against slavery. He led a small group of whites to try to capture weapons in Harper's Ferry, Virginia. The goal was to arm slaves. Plan failed and Brown was captured. He was tried for murder and treason. He was hanged. -
Lincolns Election
Lincoln won the majority of the votes. Lincoln won all of Northerns votes. -
Confederate States of America formed
Southern states started their own country. The president was Jefferson Davis. The capital was Richmond, Virginia. -
South carolina secedes
South carolina opposed Lincolns election and voted to break away. They did not want to be part of the United states. They were the first southern state to fo this. -
Battle of Fort Summer
A strategic fort that guarded Charleston Harbor. It was occupied by the Union forces. Southern forces bombarded the fort until the Union gave up. No deaths -- except a horse.
