Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was a law passed by Congress to try to appease the South and prevent a war. The law said that runaway slaves who made it to the free states in the North had to be sent back. Anyone caught helping slaves runaway was in big, big trouble. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel published by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It describes the treatment on slaves on southern plantations. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
The Kansas Nebraska Act split Nebraska territory into two pieces, and allowed the residents of each territory to vote on whether to be slave or free. -

Bleeding Kansas
When the Kansas Nebraska Act allowed the residents on Kansas to vote on slavery, thousands of both pro and anti-slavery supporters came to Kansas from other states and attempted to vote illegally. Years of confrontation and violence followed, causing a mini-Civil War in Kansas. -

Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas participated in a series of seven debates during their campaign for senator of Illinois. The debates clearly demonstrated the division of opinions in the United States. -
Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown, a radical abolitionist, led a group of 22 men to attack the federal armory at Harper's Ferry. They caught the soldiers their by suprise, and successfully held the armory for 36 hours, until US forces overwhelmed them. -
Lincoln's Election
Abraham Lincoln won 40% of the popular vote and 59% of the electoral vote to be elected the 16th president of the United States. -
