Causes of the American Revolution

  • The first Continental Congress

    The first Continental Congress
    Representatives from all colonies except Georgia came to send a petition to get representation within Parliament and other important British branches of government. They said if there demands were not met they would boycott all British goods.

    The French and Indian War

    The English government wanted to get the French out of the Ohio River valley. The British had allowed Governor Dinwidde of Virginia wants to make profits so he starts the Ohio company and sends George Washington to tell the French to leave. It does not go well and results in the French and Indian War. The British win the war and get all the French territory in the new world. This is substantial because it made England the most substantial holder of territory in the new world.

    The Proclamation of 1763 made it so the colonists could not settle in the territory won in the French and Indian war. This made the colonists extremely angry. This was established to get the British relationship with the native Americans back on track because the British the could not afford another war.
  • Sugar act

    Sugar act
    The sugar act was a tax that was pushed on to the colonists to get them out of debt. This taxed all sugar with a 3 cent tax. The British eventually repealed this act
  • Stamp act

    Stamp act
    This tax was put on the colonies by Parliament to help get Britain out of debt.Stamps had to be put on almost all paper items. The tax was very expensive because all the paper that was being used at the time.
  • Townshend act

    Townshend act
    This act taxed the colonists on all British imports. This included all household items like furniture paint and glass. The colonists still did not like these taxes and there form of showing they didn't like them was by smuggling the goods and boycotted the British sales.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    A colonists aggravated this shooting in Boston that ended with the results that the British soldiers killed 5 colonists. The British troops were jailed for 8 months to await trial for murder. The troops were found all not guilty other than 2.

    The committee of correspondence was a secret organization that helped bond the colonies together. They established communication which was vital at the time
  • The tea act/ the Boston tea party

    The tea act/ the Boston tea party
    60 sons of liberty climbed on to 3 of the east India company's tea ships in the Boston harbor. They then proceeded to dump 324 crates of British tea into the harbor. they did as little damage as possible to the ships.

    These three acts sowed tensions into the colonies by making life hard for the colonists. these acts were so intolerable because they closed the Boston harbor ,they made the colonists feed and board the British soldiers , they made it so the British troops had to be tried in Britain so it made them practically able to get away with murder.
  • The battles of Lexington and Concord

    The battles of Lexington and Concord
    The opening battles of the revolutionary war consisted of 60 militia men standing off to over 900 train British Redcoats.The militia lost 8 men at the battle of Concord with more wounded.The British redcoats then marched to Lexington to seek and destroy all colonist weapons and ammunition.The neighboring towns gathered there troops which was about 1000 men total and inflicted casualty's to the British troops.They chased them all the way back to Boston killing over a third of there troops.
