  • Sugar act

    Parliament passed a tax for the colonies to pay taxes on sugar, to help pay for the money they lost in the war. By passing this tax, it didn’t just affect sugar it also affected coffee, textiles, indigo and wine. As a result of the sugar act there was an increase in smuggling throughout the American colonies.
  • Stamp Act

    The stamp act was passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765. This tax required colonists to pay a tax on everything they printed on paper. Including legal documents, licenses, newspapers and even playing cards. The British felt good about this tax because the colonies were receiving the benefit of the British troops and needed to help pay for the expenses, the colonists did not feel the same, they felt it was unfair to tax their goods.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre was a street fight with a mob throwing snowballs, stones and sticks that resulted in the soldiers firing killing five colonists. It took place on March 5th, 1770, between a mob and British soldiers. The colonists were rioting due to the parliament passing the sugar and stamp acts without colonists representation.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston tea party occurred on December 16, 1773 when American patriots disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians. They dumped 342 chests of tea (46 tons) into the Boston harbor. Colonists were frustrated about the government imposing the “no taxation without representation”.
  • Intolerable acts

    These were laws passed by the British Parliament to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. One law allowed English soldiers to invade the homes of the colonists. Another law closed down the Boston Harbor. American colonists were outraged and refused to follow the laws.
