    Germany, Austria, and Hungary formed the Triple alliance in 1882, which concluded that if any one country was attacked the others went to defend them. In 1907 the Triple Entente Britain, Russia, and France formed an alliance to counteract the Triple Alliance.

    Franz Ferdinand was shot by Gavrilo Princip, a member of a group trying to break Austria's South-Slav provinces so it can form Yugoslavia.

    Land based strategy of the Allies which intended to allow Allied ships to pass through Dardanelles, capture Constantinople, and knock Ottoman Turkey out of the war. Two landings were attempted, but were suppressed by Ottoman troops. Trench warfare took hold, and casualties mounted. In December, it was decided to evacuate after failing to have any success.     July 1- November 18 1916. Joint operation between British and French forces intended to achieve victories over Germans. Faced carefully laid out German forces, advanced seven miles over 141 days, with nearly a million men dying on each side combined.

    Ended war between Germany and other allied powers. This treaty forced many problems upon Germany, forcing her to disarm, make substantial territorial compensations, and pay reparations to Entente powers. This weakened Germany, and caused Germans to be angry at other Europeans.
