Bleeding kansas
A mini civil war broke out in Kansas between anti- slavery people and people who wanted slavery. They had to repeal the act because it got so bad inkansas people started calling it bleeding kansas -
1854 BCE
Kansas Nebraska act
Stephen Douglas came up with a plan to make Kansas and Nebraska to decide slaveey using popular sovereignty. Northerners hated this because it repealed the Missouri compromise. -
1850 BCE
Comprimise of 1850
A compromise put together by Henry clay about slave states. California would enter as a free state, while Utah and New Mexico would use popular sovereignty to decide slavery. This was made to settle the dispute over slavery in the Mexican cession and it worked. This also outlawed slave trade in the district of Colombia and established a new fugitive slave law. -
1850 BCE
Fugitive slave act
Made it a crime to help a runaway slave and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas. They made this so that way it is harder for slaves to escape but this upset a lot of people and they started to join abolitionists. -
1846 BCE
Wilmot proviso
A document made by David Wilmot stating that slavery should be banned in the Mexican cession. But this document did not pass because the south had more power in the senate and they didn't like the document. This was meant to settle the debate over slavery in the Mexican cession. This caused the free soil party to arise and a big debate over sectionalism. -
1820 BCE
Missouri Comprimise
A compromise made by Henry clay in 1820 to ban slavery past the 36' 30' or missouris border. This would solve the issue over what states join in as free or slave states. But this will later be repealed by the Kansas- Nebraska act.
