1606 - Pedro Fernandez de Quiros who is the Spanish captain calls Vanuatu “La Australia del Spiritu Santo” – (Southland of the Holy Spirit)
Pedro Fernandez was a Portugal and Spanish navigator and he was the first European visitor, he was born in 1568 and he sadly died in 1615, he had discovered a new land but he knew that the Spanish couldn’t afford it. -
1627 Peter Nuyts sails along eastern shore of the Great Australian Bight
1627 he had found/seen the coast of Western Australia and that he hoped something fresh/new was there. This man was born in 1598 and died in 1655, he had a wife and two sons, he went to the university of Leiden, he all so became feriliar with the bible passages and the laws. -
1688 The English pirate William Dampier spends nine weeks on the north-west coast of Australia
In 1688 he went to the North-West part of Australia to explore what was there, this happened 70 years before Captain James cook had come to Australia. William Dampier was born in 1651 and died in 1715, he was a great explore and that most of his adventures around the world was mainly in America, he was one of the first English men to explore the north-west part of Australia! -
1697 William de Vlamingh lands on Western Australian coast
William de Vlamingh sailed (with two other boats to accompany him) to western Australia from Amsterdam and searched around the place for a while before going into new, he had some luck while adventuring some parts of Australia during his journey he had collected some Turtles eggs to take back to Amsterdam. William De Vlamingh was born in 640 and he died in 1698, at a very young age he got his very own ship and was a commander at the age of 24. -
1770 - Captain James Cook explores the east coast of Australia
In 1770 James cook explores the east coast of Australia he was in charge of this adventure and that along the way he comes across a new place to live in. James cook was a man from England and that he was born in 1728 and he died in 1778, he was a great navigator /explorer and captain, he called “Australia no man’s land”. -
1778 Arrival of First Fleet at Sydney Cove
The first fleet was a huge moment in Australia on this day there were 11 ships filled with convicts they were not just British people but they were people from other countries too (men, children and women too), when they arrived at Botany Bay they saw that they weren’t alone, the British people went to Australia so that they can have a place to put all their convicts. -
1778 first mass in Australia
In the same year of the First Fleet there was a mass possibly run by Fr Rexeveur, this mass was the first to be held on Australian soil, he was born in 1577 and he died in 1788, Fr Rexeveur was buried in Australia (first priest to be buried in Australia). -
1803 First public Mass said by Fr. Dixon
Father Dixon was born in 1758 and he died in 1840, he was one of the Russian Preist, he sailed to different places for example in the 1800 he went to new south wales on the friendship boat to practise his religion, but before that in 1798 he was arrested, he was accused of having something to do in the Irish Rebellion. -
1820 Frs. Therry and Conolly, the first official priests arrive
Father Therry was born in 1790 and died in 1864 and Father Conolly was born in 1876 and he died on 1838 was the first two priest to arrive in Australia, they sailed in a boat with 100's of prisoners once they arrived in Australia they practiced their religious faith. -
1847 - James Alepius Goold becomes first Catholic bishop of Melbourne
He became the first catholic bishop of Melbourne and he was appointed on the 9th of July in 1878 by Pope Pius the ninth. James Alepius Goold was born in 1812 and he died in 1886, he had built a lot of churches and schools, he was awarded the outstanding missionary award. -
1885 Archbishop Moran made Cardinal
He was born in 1830 and he had died in1911, he was the youngest of 5 children he was a very smart man and he knew a lot of languages, he was a great translator. Years later he had just come back from Sydney and he had got an offer to the next Cardinal; Cardinal are like people who help the pope, basically they are counselour. -
1909 Death of Mary McKillop
She was born in 1842 and died in 1909, she was the eldest of 8 children and that she grew up to be a nun, Mary Mckillop was a great Australian saint (her feast day is on August 8th) who fought for education for poor children she worked with FatherWoods (her full saint name was Mary Helen Mckillop/ Saint Mary Of The cross ) -
1913 Arrival of Archbishop Daniel Mannix in Melbourne
Daniel Mannix was from Ireland and he was born in 1864 and he had died in 1963, he came to Australia on Easter Saturday and that he had hope to be a great catholic in Australia and preached about all the good things. -
1938 Monsignor Francois-Xavier Gsell appointed as Bishop of Darwin
He was born in 1872 and he died on 1960 he was a well known Bishop and that he worked with the missionary some things he did for the missionary was teach others from different places and he all so preached, he left the Bathurst island to become the Bishop of Darwin. He had fought for the catholic Cathedrals and the schools and with all his courage he won against the Government. -
1995 John Paul II visits Australia for Beatification of Mary McKillop
He came from Poland and he was born in 1920 and he had died in 2005, John Paul the second had visited Australia to bless Mary Mckillop and pushes forward for her to be the first Australian Saint, but later in the 2000’s he was invited by the prime minister to talk about important things such as a bunch of issues about kangaroos, about the pope’s can come down to Australia and much more. -
2000 Opening of Corpus Christi seminary, Carlton
A seminary is an environment where Priest and rabbis come together and learn/train together, before the corpus Christi’s seminary was built they would train their priest in a Victorian province, this is one of the oldest seminary’s that is still operating/working in Australia.
