Death of the Old, Arrival of the New
After the last empress had died, Peter took control of Russia while Catherine took the title of empress. Many of the people wanted to overthrow Peter and take control. Catherine used this and was able to take control of Russia and declare herself the sole ruler, and have Peter arrested and killed. -
Crowned as Leader
Catherine the Great was finally crowned as the leader of Russia. She used the lessons she had learned from enlightenment philosophers and backed away from the traditional absolutism beliefs by using reason and science. This made Catherine the Great a very unique absolute monarch. -

Catherine the Great has The Hermitage Museum built. Today the museum contains over 2.7 million exhibits including art from Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and others. -
