Catherine is forced to start a journal.
Edward, her brother who is a monk, tells Catherine she will "grow less childish and more learned" if she keeps an "account of her days." He is her favorite brother, but Catherine still doesn't like being told what to do. She is angry that he calls immature. She is not happy about keeping a journal. She also hates spinning! -

Catherine is delivered!
Catherine and her mother strike a bargain: Catherine will write her "account of her days" for Edward and her mother will let her quit spinning. Catherine is happy with this arrangement and really starts to tell her story. She talks about her mother and father, Lady Aislinn and Lord Rollo. Her three brothers are Edward, a monk, and Thomas and Robert, both in the king's service. Morwenna is her nurse. It is Catherine's 14th year. -

Lady Tasks
Catherine hates spinning, weaving, embroidering, and soap making. She wishes she was rich enough to have servants to do these taskes. These are the responsibilities of a lady. Morwenna helps teach her these tasks. Morwenna is her nurse. Catherine calls the solar her "prison." -

Master Lack Wit
Catherine's first suitor arrives and leaves quickly after Catherine blacks her teeth and sticks mouse bones in her hair. He is a wool merchant from Yarmouth. Her mother doesn't like him because he is not a nobleman. -

Perkin
Catherine's good friend is Perkin, the goat boy. He memorizes Latin and always tricks Catherine's father into taking the weakest goat on quarter rent day. Perkin is Catherine's "good friend and heart's brother."
