    Some extra details:First shots fired, North Vietnamese patrol boats attack the USS Maddox in the waters of Tonkin. This incident was known as The Gulf of Tonkin, it lasted till Augest 7. USS Maddox was roaming the coast of North Vietnam during a South Vietnamese SPEC OP to destroy a radar station, this supposedly provoked the North Vietnamese to launch their boats. During the late night of Augest 4th the Maddox headed out again to Tonkin to encounter more Vietnamese forces. This second attack was revealed as fake.

Nearly 645,000 tons of bombs were dropped on North Vietnam during the operation but 900 U.S. Aircraft was lost during the operation that lasted three years to 1968. North Vietnamese rebuilt most destroyed targets almost instantly.
