Armenian Massacre
The Armenian Massacre occured in April of 1915. It happend in present day Turkey. Between 1 and 1.5 million people were killed during the massacre. The young Turk party was killing armenians in massive amounts. -
Soviet Purges
The Russians were attempting to get rid of the "undesirables". Their party was led by Sergei Kirov. They wanted as many as possible to be expelled from their party. Being expelled from the party didnt mean just leaving, it meant almost certain arrest, imprisonment, and often times, execution. In a little less than 20 years the party had expelled over 400,000 people. -
Rape of Nanjing
The Rape of Nanjing took place in july of 1937. It occured in China. The Japanese were killing the chinese and burning them alive. Atleast 200,000 chinese people were slaughtered during this event. -
German Holocaust
The German holocaust began on september 1 1939. It took place in Germany, Poland and other areas throughout europe. The Germans wanted to exterminate the jews. 6 million jews were killed by the nazis. Germany was under control of Adolf Hitler during the holocaust. -
South African Apartheid
Apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa. New legislation classified people as "black, white, native, or Asaian."Residentianl areas were segregated and the minorities were treated with great disrespect and had fewer rights. -
My Lai Massacre
In My Lai, Vietnam, during the Vietnam war, American soldiers of the "Charlie Company" invaded the town and shot at every person or animal that moved. Approximately 500 people lost their lives. -
Uganda under Idi Amin
In 1971 Idi Amin came to power in Uganda. In August 1972, Amin expelled almost all of Uganda's 80,000 asians and seized their property. Amin calimed that the 'common man' would benefit most from this drastic act but it turned out that the army benefitted most. The 'commom men' were suffering even more now due to failed businesses and and slowed sugar production. The Soviet Union was Amins greatest arms supplier. -
Chile under Augusto Pinochet
Chilean armed forces invaded Chile. Political opponents were killed by the goverment under the rule of Pinochet, when he was elected into office.197 people were killed, and about 29,000 people were tortured. -
Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge
Pol Pot was the leader of the communist movement known as the Khemer Rouge. He was the Prime MInister of Democratic Kampuchea from 1976 to 1979. During his time in power Pol Pot forced citizens to relocate to the country to work in farms and forced labor projects for the goals of "restarting civilization." Slave labor, mainutrition, poor medical care, and executions resulted in the deaths of around 750,000 people. -
Missing People Under Juan Peron in Argentina
Juan Peron, dictator of Argentina wanted to rule over everyone and everything in Argentina. Sate terrorism and guerilla warfare occured. About 30,000 people lost their lives. -
Iraq under Saddam Hussein
Iraq under Saddam Hussein was known for its severe violations of human rights. Secret police, torture, mass murder, rape, deportations, forced disappearances, assassinations, chemical warfare, and the destruction of southern Iraq's marshes were some of the methods the country's Ba'athist government used to maintain control. There were as many as 182,000 killed during his time in power. -
Somalia Civil War
Citizens of Somalia were killed and tortured during the Somalia Civil War. Approximately 1,000,000,000 citizens died. -
Sierra Leone and the child soldiers
The rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Sierra Leone is forcing children, including demobilized child soldiers, to join its ranks and engage in combat. Sierra Leone's republic of people consists of about 5 million people, half of them under the age of 18. -
Genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Serbia invaded Bosnia with Yugoslavian war equipment to "ethnically cleanse" the area. They wanted Bosnian Muslims. They claimed to have freed the Serbian orthodox Christians living in Bosnia. The invasion ended in 1995. -
Rwanda Genocide
The Rwanda Genocide occured on April 6, 1994. It took place in the East African state of Rwanda. This genocide lasted for one hundred days. In the genocide the Tutsis fought against the Rwandans. About 500,000 people were killed in total. -
Darfur Conflict
The Darfur Conflict occured in February of 2003. Darfur groups were fighting against Sudan. JEM and SLM/A accused sudanese governments of oppressing non-arabs sudanese in favor of sudanese arabs. At the end of the conflict over 10,000 civilians were dead.
