While in combat in frnace, An 88mm shell exploded very close to arture, ad he recalls "a fragment razed and cut me upper lip..so i wrapped my scarf around my face, and the blood stopped. it was 20 degrees below zero so that also helped the bleeding stop.'

Shortly after being injured, Arture had been buried in the snow for several days and was lost from the rest of the troops. He recalls that a dog had been folowwing him aroubd and that the dog kept him warm.
