Paul Anka
Paul Anka was Canada's first Rock and Roll idol as a teen. In 1955 he auditioned for ABC with the song he wrote called "Diana" It was an instant success and brought stardom. He was the first canadian to have a Number One in the American Billboards charts with Diana. He can be compared to Justin Bieber in his popularity as a teen. -
Apex Records
In the 1960's Canadian music was regarded with indiffernce so many artists and bands were forced to go to the USA to gain any recognition. So in 1960 the first Canadian record company was made called Apex records. This allowed bands to have the option of staying in Canada -
Early sixties
The early sixties introduced the popilarity of Folk Rock and Country Rock. Two famous peformers at this time were Leanord Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot is considerd as Canada's greatest songwriter and achieved gold and multi-platinum albums throughout his career. He also performed at this years Grey Cup. -
The Band
Shortley after Paul Anka gaimned fame a group called the Band was formed. The Band is considerd as one of the most influental bands in history. The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Rush have all been influenced by them. -
Late Sixties
The late sixties rock was directed towards psychedil rock, heavy metal, and progressive rock due to the change of times that included civil rights, the rise of feminism and America's involvemnet in the vietnom war. -
Late sixties bands
Examples of the change of rock bands in the late sixties is bands like Steppenwolf who are famous for the song Born To Be Wild which was named one of Rolling Stones 500 greatest songs of alltime. Another great band was the Guess Who who made a name for themselves with the song American Women. These are both examples of how rock music began to evolve in the Canadian rock scene -
Neil Young reaches stardom
Neil Young rose to international fame as a Folk Rock singer. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was in two famoius bands called Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. His most famous songs include Heart of Gold, Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River. -
CRTC
In 1970 the CRTC regulations for broadcasting were put into place. This helped Canadian rock bands be a major focus of Canada's recording industry. -
Juno awards and FM radio
The first Juno Award Cermoney was held in 1971 which helped play a role in the idea on canadian Content.
With the introduction of FM radio longer songs could be played on the radio which helped bands like Rush and Bachman-Turner Overdrive gain international success. -
Can-Con Laws
In 1971 the Canadian Content rules were passed ensuring Canadian Artists werent overrun by American media outlets. -
Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Their biggest hit came in 1974 titled "Taking Care of Business" which earned being a number one hit and their best remembered hit. Their lead sinder Randy Bachman whose first band was Guess Who -
Rush
Rush is one of the most well known bands ever. They boast an incrdiable 25 gold records, 14 platinum records with 3 of them being multi-platinum. These astounding record sales turned them into one of the best selling bands of all time. Rush is third behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for the most consecituve gold and platinum albums by a rock band. Some of their most famous songs include Tom Sawyer, Closer To The Heart, Spirit Of Radio and Limelight. -
Loverboy
Loverboy also gained great success in the 1980's. They are a great example of a Canadian band who signed a canadian record deal and gained international success. Their record deal was with Colombia/Cbs Records Canada. Loverboy's famed songs include "Working For The Weekend", "Lovin Every Minute Of It" and "Turn Me Loose" -
Bryan Adams
Bryan Adams was Canada's superstar of the 80's. One of his most famous songs of his career is summer of 69 -

Music Videos played a large role for canadian Rock Bands in the 80's. Muchmusic came out in 1984 and MusiquePls came out in 1986 -
late 1980's
In the late 80's alternative rock became prominent with bands like the Tragically Hip. They werent anywhere as popular in the US as they are in Canada but they have have become such a household name in Canada they have had a long and very profitable career. -
Barenaked Ladies
The Barenaked ladies released the album Yellow Tape in 1991 which reached platinum status in Canada. Since then they have recorded hits like "If I Had A Million Dollars" and The Big Bang Theory Song -
Today
Famous Canadian bands in more recent times include Billy Talent Hedley, The Sheepdogs, Simple Plan, Sum 41, and Nickelback who have sold 50 million albums worldwide being the only band from Canada to do that. Arcade Fire is another canadian band to gain great recognition when they won a Grammy for Album Of The Year in 2011. Nickelback and Arcde Fire are both examples of how far Canadian Rock and Roll has come.
