Canada signed the treaty independently, but the signature was indented under ‘British Empire’. -

Prime Minister Robert Borden managed to get Canada a separate seat on the league, independent of Britain. -
Chanak Crisis
Many Canadians were isolationist – people who did not want to get involved in European affairs. King replied that only the Canadian Parliament could make decisions to send Canadian troops. That is, Canada (not Britain) would make its own decisions regarding foreign policy. -
Halibut Treaty
King insisted Canada sign the treaty, not Britain. Canada won the right to sign treaties with a foreign country on its own. -
Imperial Conference
For the first time Canada had negotiated and signed its own treaty without involvement from England. -
King-Byng Crisis
The Canadian government could communicate directly with the British government (not through the Government-General). -
Balfour Report
The Balfour Report declared that Canada was a self-governing independent nation. Canada was no longer a Dominion. -
Statute of Westminster
Canada became completely self-governing, and made its own laws.
