    The Treaty Of Versailles was a treaty which was signed to stop the fighting in World War 1 Countries allowed Canada to attend the meeting and sign as a separate country from Britain, this showed how important Canada was to the victory This illustrated Canada’s growing independence by recognizing that it’s efforts in war were significant, allowing for it to sign on it’s own apart from Britain
  • League Of Nations

    League Of Nations
    The League of Nations was a group created by many countries which attempted to create world peace and avoid wars in the future after World War 1 Canada was granted it’s own seat on the League of Nations, with the argument that Canada lost many soldiers compared to countries who had seats like the United States of America This illustrated Canada’s growing independence because it was recognized as its own region with political power by having a seat on the League of Nations
  • Chanak Crisis

    Chanak Crisis
    The Chanak Crisis was when Turkey threatened to take over Chanak which caused Britain to disagree with them. Britain then told Canada to send military support in the case of a war between Britain and Turkey Many Canadians did not want to get involved in European issues, Mackenzie King said only the Canadian Parliament can decide to send Canadian troops This illustrated Canada’s growing independence because it initialized the beginning of Canada making its own foreign policies
  • Imperial Conference

    Imperial conferences were meetings which were held involving Britain and all of it’s dominions The imperial conferences endorsed Mackenzie King’s independent signing of the Halibut treaty between Canada and the United States This illustrated Canada’s growing independence because it showed that other dominions with political power in Britain also supported independence, foreshadowing a change in the independence of Canada
  • Halibut Treaty

    Halibut Treaty
    The Halibut Treaty was an agreement between Canada and the United states about the Halibut fishing season in the North Pacific Ocean. Mackenize King made Canada sign the treaty instead of Britain. This caused Canada to win the right to sign treaties as a foreign country. This illustrated Canada’s growing independence as it started to show that Canada was a region of the world that made decisions for itself, apart from the British.
  • King-Byng Crisis

    King-Byng Crisis
    The governor general Julian Byng, at the time had much power in Canada as a part of the British Government. Julian Byng refused to dissolve the Canadian Parliament and an election call. Mackenzie King said that Julian Byng was ignoring the Canadian government with his powers This caused the government to cease the power of the governor general role. the governor general was made a representative of the crown which had no power against making decisions, the role could only sign them.

    The Balfour Report made Canada a self governing independent nation Canada was no longer a dominion of the British, but remained apart of the British Commonwealth which signified their allegiance to the British This illustrated Canada’s growing independence by making Canada its own region apart from Britain which was a major step towards independence
  • Statute of Westminster

    Statute of Westminster
    The British government passed the Statute of Westminster which included the Balfour report law This made Britain officially recognize Canada as an autonomous self governing country This was the biggest accomplishment towards independence as Britain finally recognized Canada as autonomous, and self governing. This meant Canada made its own laws.
