End of Ashikaga Shogunate
The Ashikaga Shogunate ended when Oda Nobunaga, an ambitous daimyo, drove Ashikaga Yoshiaki out of Kyoto. At the decisive Battle of Nagashino, the combined forces of Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu devastated the Takeda clan. Oda Nobunaga is called the initiator of the unification of Japan. Dutch East India Trading Company
The Dutch East India Trading Company sent black ships to Satusma Japan. The head of that area, Tokugawa Ieyasu, bought a few guns from them, as he understood the value. -
Hideyoshi Unifies Japan
Toyotomi Hideyoshi grew from a peasant to be one of Nobunaga's top generals. When he became a grand minister in 1586, he created a law that that non-samurai were forbidden to carry weapons, thereby ending the social mobility of Japan from which he himself had benefited. Hideyoshi secured his claim as the rightful successor of Nobunaga by defeating Akechi Mitsuhide within a month of Nobunaga's death. He unified the political factions of Japan. He continued the unification started by Nobunaga. -
First Japanese Invasion of Korea
Hideyoshi lead this invasion, the goal was to conquer the Joseon Dynasty of Korea, Jurchens, Ming Dynasty of China and Spanish Empire. The Ming Dynasty, lead by Emperor Wanli helped the Koreans. The Ming during the later half of 1592 sent investigation teams into Korea to clarify the situation. After these the decision was made for a full reinforcement by September of 1592. The Ming Emperor mobilized a larger force in January 1953. This resulted in a truce between China and Japan. -
Second Japanese Invasion of Korea
This was aimed as a retaliatory offensive against the Joseon Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty. These invasions were different as conquering China was no longer a goal. Hideyoshi ordered the withdrwal of the forces in Korea on his deathbed on September 18, 1598. There were postwar negotiations resulting in the return of prisoners and the resotration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. -

Tokugawa Ieyasu had his workers study the guns that they brought from the Dutch and by 1600 He was producing thr finest guns in the world. After he seized power, he outlawed all guns to insure that he would not by overthrown. -

Reduced Contact
Tokugawa Iemitsu continued Japan's path to self=imposed isolation by reduceing Japan's contact with the outside world to very limited trade with China and the Nehterlands. Also all foregin books were banned.
