Thomas Edison filed a patent for this divice. He called it the kinetiscope. People would walk up and peer through the eye hole on top of the machine and watch and hear the series of images that showed a story.(couldn't find the exact date only the year) -

This cinemograph was made by brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere. THis device will film, project, and even develope photos/videos. -
