    Black Codes
    What stregnthend the Radicals' deterination was the events happening in the south. In the early months of 1866, Sothern state legislators passed laws called Black Codes. Black codes were designed to help control the newly freed African Americans. An example of this law was to prevent African Americans from purchasing or renting farms. Fighting against these laws, Radical Republicans pushed the Civil rights act of 1866 through congress.

    The civli rights act of 1866 was released to protect civillians rights. One of these acts were called black codes. These law were designed to protect the rights of newly freed African Americans. At the same time, Congress attempted to protect African American's rights. Congress passed a bill in 1866 that gave the Freedmans Bureau new powers.

    Reconstruction Acts
    In 1867, congress passed the First Reconstruction Act. 10 of the former states had ratified the Fourteenth Amendment. This act had divided the south into 5 districts, excluding tennesee. In March 23, 1867, the second reconstruction act was born. This act stated that the millitary commanders were in charge of registering voters. It also stated that commanders would decide who would stay in political office and who would not.

    The 14th Amendment
    As the Thirteenth Amendment stopped the war, the Fourteenth Amendment stated: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside" -The 14th Amendment. This Amendment means that no state could take a person's life, liberty or property without due process of law.
  • 15 Amendment

    15 Amendment
    The fifteenth amendment supplements the second reconstruction act. It states that the government has no right to deny the right to for any United States Citizen no matter what race, color, or previous servitude.
