The First Californians meet the Europeans
Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to make contatct with the native people of California when he landed in San Diego . The first Californians arrived around 12000 years ago. They traveled via the Bering Strait during the ice age. They became hunters and gathers and formed what we know as the Native American tribes of California. -
Spanish Colonization
During the 1600s the Spanish began to Colonize California. -
Mission San Diego
The Mission San Diego was established. This was the first of many missions that would be built throughout California. -
The Bear Flag Republic
This Republic began when Americans seized the California Capital of Sonoma creating Hostility between the Spanish and the Americans. -

The Mexican- American War
The Mexican War was fought between the Mexican Govrnment and America for land across what is today the Mexico Border. It ended with a treaty that signed over land to America in exchange for money. -
GOLD!
James Wilson Marshall discovered gold while working at Sutters Mill in a river northeast of present day Sacramento. -

GOLD RUSH
News spread quickly that there was gold in California. Men from across the nation quit their jobs and moved to California for a chance to strike it rich with gold. Unfortunitally very few men actually did. -
CALIFORNIA BECOMES AN OFFICIAL STATE!
After years of disagreements over the territory in 1850 California became the 31st state in the United States.
