The Election of 2000
The Election of 2000 pitted candidates Al Gore and George W. Bush in a heated battle for President of the United States. The closeness of the resutls caused chaos and several attempts at recounting as everyone had mixed opinions over Bush and Gore. Bush had eventually been declared the winner. -
The Supreme Court becomes part of the Event
Bush v. Gore was the resulting case of the 2000 Election, in that the winner of the election had won by such a close amount that issues like recounts and vote handling came into question. The beginning matter revolved around Florida's choice to extend the time ceritfying the vote past the period set by law. -
Review of Bush v. Gore
The U.S. Supreme court eventually reviewed the case, and in that time, the certificate had passed, and the Supreme Court sent the case back to the Florida Supreme Court. Florida Court then ordered a recount of the ballots. -
The Supreme Court's Intervention
Once the Florida Court ordered a recount, the U.S. Supreme Court put a temporary stop to their decree. Allowing the recount to continue would violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The case was then dismissed. -
Result of the Election of 2000
The presidential election of 2000 had essentially been decided by the voting of a Supreme Court Justice. The choice was often looked at as political and not judicial.
