    Brown vs board of education
    NAACP combines 5 cases from 5 states. The court decides 9-0 and separate but equal is wrong. But many black students wouldn’t go to school with white students.
  • Murder of Emmett till

    Murder of Emmett till
    Emmett till was accused of whistling to a white woman. Emmett then was kidnapped, tortured, killed 3 days later. Emit tills mother had an open casket funeral to let the world see what happened.
  • Rosa parks and bus boycott

    Rosa parks and bus boycott
    Rosa parks was told to give up her seat for a white person but refused. She was arrested and fined $10 and the church and Martin Luther king jr sent flyers to boycott the buses on December 5. The buses were empty for 30 days and finally the Supreme Court decided that the blacks could ride.
  • Southern Christian leadership conference

    Southern Christian leadership conference
    There was a meeting of black church pastors where they organize events for black people. Martin Luther king was elected the first president. This group of people were non violent and they registered black people to vote and provided jobs for black people.
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    9 black students wanted to go to a white school. The governor of Arkansas sent the national guard to stop the students from going. President Eisenhower would have 1,200 military men to escort the black students from their home to school and back.
  • Greensboro sit ins

    Greensboro sit ins
    Black people go to Woolworth to buy items. They go sit at the lunch counter but are refused service. They are told to leave but they stayed. This repeated day after day cause Woolworth to lose money.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    436 individuals in 60 separate freedom rides were involved. A diverse group of volunteers from 39 states arrived in Anniston, Alabama and blocked by the KKK. Bus tires are slashed, burned town after town.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    250,000 people marched in Washington DC and had a peaceful protest. This protest was for jobs and freedom. Martin Luther king gave his I have a dream speech.
  • Civil rights act

    Civil rights act
    This involves Lyndon B Johnson and Martin Luther king. This took place in Washington DC. This prevented racial discrimination and segregation based on race, color, religion or national origin in private businesses or public facilities.
  • Assassination of Malcom X

    Assassination of Malcom X
    Civil rights leader Malcom x was part of the Nation of Islam. He wanted black people to believe in themselves and starts their own business. He was shot 21 times and Thomas Hagan was convicted for murder.
  • Selma to Montgomery Marches

    Selma to Montgomery Marches
    This event was also known as Bloody Sunday. Black marchers would attempt to walk 54 miles to Montgomery to register to vote. At the Edmond bridge troopers would beat the black marchers brutally.
  • Voting rights act of 1865

    Voting rights act of 1865
    This took place in Washington DC. This ended the right to vote African Americans any discrimination in voting. This is a federal matter not a state matter.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King

    Assassination of Martin Luther King
    Striking sanitation works in a protects in Memphis, Tennessee. He went back to the Lorraine Motel and has shot in the lower right side of his face with a Remington rifle. James Earl Ray was sentenced to 99 years and his death marked the need of the civil rights movement.
