  • Agreement with French about Nigeria

    British able to establish their claim to Nigeria by virtue of their occupation (Goldie and the RNC) -- 1890 agreement with the French, who agreed to recognise Britain's domination of the area in return for Britain's recognition of the French claim to Madagascar.

  • 4th Anglo - Asante War

    In the early 1890s, the British demanded the Asante King Prempeh to turn over the remainder of his empire to the British as a protectorate (the British were fed up with the continual resistance of the Asante people towards British rule throughout the 19thC - 5 wars in total between 1823-1900). Prempeh refused which led to the 4th Anglo - Asante War in which Britain conquered the Asante territories and forced Prempeh from his throne in 1896

    Asante uprising led to Britain's formal annexation of Ashantiland - incorporated into the Gold Coast Colony 1902, having managed to resist direct colonisation for the previous 80 years.
