The Navigation Acts
The Dutch had control over most of the trade with colonists. Added laws that controlled what the colonists could trade and with who. Colonists smuggled goods and ignored the rules. -
The Sugar Act
Britain was in debt because of war. They taxed sugar and molasses products which ruined the colonists' economy. The colonists had protests and boycotted British goods. -
The Quartering Act
The British barracks were filled and couldn't house all of their soldiers. Made a law that required colonists to house British soldiers if needed. The colonists protested and didn't let soldiers in. -
The Townshend Act
The act was to pay for the British official's salaries. Taxed items like tea, glass, and others. The Boston Massacre happened and high unemployment. -
The Tea Act
People were buying tea from the Dutch and not the British. It allowed the British to sell tea cheaper than the Dutch causing more British people to go back to buying from them. The colonists threw British tea into the Boston harbor destroying hundreds of dollars worth of tea. -
The Coercive Acts
The act was to restore authority in the colonies. Taxes on tea and replaced the local government with an appropriate one. The Boston Tea Party and rebellions. -
The Declatory Act
The act was so the British could gain full control of the colonies. -
The Stamp Act
The stamp act was put into place in order to raise money for the army. It put taxes on paper and printed documents. The colonists and new york assembly didn't comply with the act. -
The Quebec Act
They wanted to gain the loyalty of the French Canadians. Created a permanent administration in Canada replacing the temporary one. The colonists started to plot resistance to British laws.
