Germany's Invasion of Poland

Sep 1, 1939

1. At 4:45 AM, 1.5 million German soldiers invaded Poland. The Luftwaffe bombed Polish airfields. German ships and U-boast attacked the Polish Naval forces that were in the Baltic Sea.
2. Hitler wanted to take the other European countries for Germany's people.
3. After the German army invaded Poland, Britain declared war on Germany since Britain signed a agreement with Poland that if Germany invades you, we will declare war on Germany.

Blitzkrieg 1939-1940 Poland

1. German term for Lightning War. Used vehicles and other tactics to create a swift and quick victory.
2. Would leave the enemy in a distraut and confused and created short military campaigns.

Jun 14, 1940

1. German's took over Paris after France wanted peace with Germany. 2 million Parisians fled. Gestapo interrogated and arrested citizens that hadn't fled.
2. Because France surrendered to Nazi Germany. 3.France was then taken over by Nazi Germany.

Japan attacks Pearl Harbor

Dec 7, 1941

1. Japanese planes attack ships and the naval base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. Completely destroyed 2 ships, beached 12 ships, and damaed 9 other ships.
2. Japan attacked us so they could take over the Phillipines because if they didn't we would of sent reinforcements to stop the Japanese from taking the Phillipines over.
3. Lost 2 ships completely and lost 2,300 Americans.

Bataan Death March

Apr 10, 1942

1. U.S. surrendered Bataan Peninsula and approximately 75,000 Fillipino and American troops were forced to march 65 miles to prison camps.
2. Because U.S. surrendered
3. 75,000 Fillipino and U.S. troops had to march to prison camps and many died during the trip there.

D-day

Jun 6, 1944

1. 156,000 American, British, Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50 mile stretch of fortified coast of Normandy, France.
2. Allied forces wanted to drive out German forces from France.
3. Was a step to defeating Germany.

Battle of the Bulge

Dec 16, 1944

1. Largest battle on the western front in Europe. German's pushed back in allied forces. Was in heavely forest area. U.S lost many men. U.S. troops were stranded out so it was easy for them to be attacked.
2. German's wanted to push back American troops in France.
3. America lost 20,000 men. 20,000 men were captured and 40,000 were wounded.

Battle of Iwo Jima Feb 19 - Mar 26

Feb 19, 1945

1. U.S. attacked because they needed a base near the Japanese coast. America lost many Marines. U.S. did a air and naval bombardment.
2. U.S. needed base near Japanese coast.
3. U.S. lost mor men than the Japanese.

Battle of Okinawa

Apr 1, 1945

1. U.S. Troops were sent to the island to take of the vital air bases to invade Japan . Was the largest battle in the pacific theatre. U.S. took it over but lost a lot of men.
2. U.S. needed the air bases their and a large enough island to launch an invasion on Japan.
3. U.S. lost 65,000 men and Japan llost 77,000 men.

VE Day

May 8, 1945

1. Known as victory day in Europe. Was the mark of formal acceptance by the allies of WWII of Nazi Germany;s unconditional surrender.
2. Germany surrendered and the Allies won the war against them.
3. Ended the War for the countries in Europe and U.S. against Germany.

Atomic bombs dropped Aug 6 - Aug 9

Aug 6, 1945

1, Hiroshima- B-29 bomb drops the world's first atomic bomb 80,000 were killed. Nagasaki- Adapted B-29 bomber drops the second bomb and it killed 60,000 to 80,000 people.
2. U.S. needed to end the war quickley.
3. Ended the war for the U.S. against Japan and killed over 100,000 Japanese.

VJ Day

Aug 14, 1945

1.Known as Victory over Japan day. Where Japan srrendered to the U.S.. The allied supreme commander and Japanese foreign minister and the Japanese army chief of staff signed the official surrend on the U.S.S Missouri.
2. Japan lost the war and surrendered and we won.
