Season 2 Episode 11 - Gustavo Fring
This is the first time the audience is introduced to Gustavo Fring. In this scene Gus is shown in all yellow. Yellow represents joy, happiness, caution, comfort, liveliness, optimism, wisdom - all descriptors that Gus depicts in any scene where he is working in Los Pollos Hermanos. -
Season 2 Episode 11 - Walt Meets Gus
This is the first glimpse Walt gets of Gus. Beautifully crafted, this camera angle captures the full body image of Gus, while keeping him in low value light in the beautiful reflection. This is almost a foreshadow of the darkness that Gus is about to bring into Walt's life -
Season 2 Epidsode 11 - Los Pollos
This scene introduces Gustavo Fring to the entire series. Every hue used in the Pollos Hermanos joint is a very vivid color with extremely solid shades and a bright tones, giving off a good feeling rather than an evil feeling. This was a great way to introduce the public side of Gus before the show divulges into the hidden, evil side of the man. -
Season 3 Episode 1 - The Second Meeting
This is the first time Gus is shown in season 3. Compared to the last scene in Los Pollos Hermanos in season 2, this scene has a much darker appearance to it. While Gus is still in bright and friendly colors, the entire appearance of the restaurant is dark and shadowy - which falls in line perfectly with the tone of Gus and Walt's meeting to discuss business. -
Season 3 Episode 2 - The Laundry Joint
This is the first scene Gus is shown working at his secretive job of running a meth empire. While Gus is still wearing a bright yellow button up shirt, the tone of this shirt is a lot less vibrant than the attire he wears in the restaurant. This establishes a difference between his "public" job, that is in a good and healthy environment, and his "private" job in which he is in a much darker environment dealing with hardcore criminals, and even being a hard criminal. -
Season 3 Episode 3 - The Meeting
Gus is in in full character as a meth dealer for the first time in the series. In this scene, Gus is meeting with other major drug dealers and dealing with territory concerns. The images from this scene are filled with a lot of saturation, painting the scene in a very intense environment. At first glance (the top picture), Gus is shown in between shadows, which carries on for the rest of the scene. -
Season 3 Episode 5 - The Lab
This is the first time Walt is introduced to his new megalab for cooking meth. This is a beautiful shot taken from the scene, because Gus is shown in the shadows behind Walt as a red light illuminates the two. The red light in pair with Gus' glare at Walt is a perfect forshadowing method used to show the evil that is about to transpire from within the lab. In this scene, red illuminates Gus in order to represent danger, strength, power, anger, and action. -
Season 3 Episode 6 - The Confrontation
Conveniently, this episode is titled "Sunset". This image beautifully uses light to increase tension. The only thing lighting up Gus or the cousins is the sunset, and since the sun is out of screen there is no direct light. The sun illuminates the entire landscape, showing that the three are meeting out in the middle of nowhere, which also increases the tension. -
Season 3 Episode 8 - Pollos
This scene is beautifully lit to portray Gus' appearances. In the back the Pollos Hermanos sign is brightly illuminated, giving light to the environment while keeping with the ties of always having the restaurant painted in a bright color. On the other hand you have Gus in complete shadows now, away from the building. Gus is on a phone call with a cartel member, so the darkness represents Gus in his side job. -
Season 3 Episode 8 - Gus Intervenes
In this scene Gus makes a very subtle threat to Walt's family by stepping into personal matters after Hank (Walt's brother-in-law) was injured by members of a rival drug cartel. I thought it was interesting that Gus was still in his bright yellow clothes that he wears while working for Pollos Hermanos (always in a happy, public eye), yet the bright clothes were covered by his jacket, showing that he is not there just to keep up appearances at his job, but to send Walt a message as well. -
Season 3 Episode 11 - Dinner
In this very passive-aggressive scene, Walt and Gus sit down in Gus' own home to share a meal. Even though Gus is shown in a home environment, the darkness of his clothes and the dim-lit room portrays Gus in a business-like environment. -
Season 3 Epidode 12 - Another Meeting
The light used in this scene is masterfully done. Many hues and tones are used to show the difference between 5 different characters squeezed into one frame. The light coming in from the window lets in a soft glow, but it is not overdone to make the meeting seem less intense. The light shades of Gus' undershirt make him stand out the most out of all the characters, highlighting him as the ringleader of the meeting. -
Season 3 Episode 13 - One Last Meeting
This is another beautifully landscaped image from this episode. The entire background is lit masterfully, giving off about 6 shades that illuminate the four characters. I love how the characters are all dressed in dark clothing are not shown close enough to see any specific details other than their silhouettes. The different hues of the background really show the vast landscape, but are all painted in dark tones to keep up the intensity of the picture. -
Season 4 Episode 1 - Gus
This is one of Gus' most pivotal scenes in the show. Gus finally releases his anger on Walt that he has been keeping in for so long, not by killing Walt or Jesse, but by killing the only other person who knew how to cook their meth - sending a message that he is not one to be messed with. The color of the attire beautifully represents Gus' emotions because he has never been shown wearing red until this scene when he releases all of his emotions.
