Charles IV acceded to the throne and named Manuel Godoy as prime minister, who sarted a war aginst France. -
Peace of Basel.
The French invaded territories in the north of Spain, forcing Godoy to sing this agreement. -
Treaty of Fontainebleau and the Mutiny of Aranjuez (1807/1808)
Finally Godoy allied with Napoleon, leading to the occupation of the peninsula. This was the spark of the Mutiny of Aranjuez, a popular revolt against concessions made by Godoy. This led to Godoy´s demotion and king´s abdication. -

He received Spanish throne from his brother, Napoleon, in the abdications of Bayonne. He also implemented the Bayonne Statute.
During this period, spanish society was divided in to two groups: afrancesados( in favour of the new monarchy) and patriots. -

Napoleon Yielded Spanish throne to his brother Joseph Bonaparte, thanks to the disagreements in the Bourbon family. -
The cortes of Cadiz and the first Constitution.
This recognised individual rigths, established national sovereignty and separation of powers. -

The bourbon dynasty returned to Spain with a great support of the people.

A succession problem started between the daughter of the king, Isabella, and the male successor of the throne, Don Carlos. Ferdinand VII changed the Salic Law, that prevented women from inheriting the throne. -

The regency was given to her mother (Maria Christina) and the General Espartero. -
